Description

演讲大纲:
The end of World War II sparked off processes for independence in the different colonised countries around the world, including Malaya and Singapore. Singapore's Independence in 1965 was attained in stages. It was governed as a British Crown Colony from 1946 until partial internal self governance for the Labour Front party was granted in 1955. The 1959 Legislative Assembly elections replaced it with a new progress-oriented government, but Singapore then merged with Malaya, North Borneo and Sarawak to form the geobody known as Malaysia from 1963 to 1965.

From 1957 to 1973, four major national projects were planned, designed and constructed: the National Library (1960), the National Theatre (1963), the Singapore Conference Hall (1965) and the National Stadium (1973). Each served different functions in creating citizens and affect for the nation in different ways: enabling literacy and knowledge, connecting with regional and world cultures, a place for communication and programmes, and a space for health and sport, respectively. Three of the buildings have been demolished and the last reused for a different purpose. This talk recounts their histories and importance to Singapore's development in its first two decades, as a nascent nation finding a place in the world.
